Upon arriving in Penang, it is certainly important to explore the region’s rich natural ecology! We visited the Penang Botanical Gardens located in George Town. Strolling along the forest trails, we observed various tropical plants and animals. We experienced the biodiversity of Penang, and reflected on the way how humans and nature co-exist.

The scenery in Penang Botanical Gardens was truly stunning. Tall trees, for instance, the 30-meter-high Antiaris toxicaria, could be spotted. A rich diversity of wildlife could be observed as well. Dusky Leaf Monkeys climbing and foraging among the trees, and different birds, including the White-headed Munia, were searching for food on the turf. What’s more, butterflies and a variety of insects gracefully danced among the flowers.
The botanical garden was home to several monkey species, including Leaf Monkeys and Macaques. Luckily, I did not see them stealing food from or disturbing visitors. Such a harmonious atmosphere certainly put a smile on my face. It may be the result of a long process, which has shaped Malaysians’ attitudes toward wild animals. This visit has prompted me to reflect on the relationship between humans and animals. Perhaps, we, as Hongkongers, could learn a valuable lesson from this journey.
