Proposal for Hong Kong environmental education

The enhancement and development of better implementation of environmental education in formal curriculum is urgent and imperative as we have some 10 years left to limit climate change catastrophe.

Hong Kong is now far lagging behind in the development of environmental education when compared to other developed regions. EE is being largely peripheral in local school curriculum. The mode of EE is primarily inclined to education about the environment, while education in and for the environment are lacking and need to be further developed.

It is OWLHK’s mission to promote the development of HK environmental education. In order to response to the Public engagement on Long-term Decarbonisation Strategy and the initial recommendations of the Task Force on Review of School Curriculum, Dr. Xoni Ma, Founder and Education Director of OWLHK, has written the <Proposal for Hong Kong environmental education>. From analysing the significance of EE, current situation and challenges of implementing EE, a total of 22 recommendations in 7 aspects (Policy, curriculum, school, teacher education, research, programmes and collaboration with external bodies) for better implementation of school EE were given.

Hence, OWLHK encourages all of you, especially who are in the field of education or environmental education, please feel free to extract some of the contents in this proposal to submit comments to both of these consultations, and to push the development of HK EE together.
