This course was organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and delivered by OWLHK. The course focuses on insects, enhancing the interest and research skills of gifted students (P4-6) in ecology and biodiversity. It also aims to cultivate positive values and attitudes, such as environmental protection, respect for life, and social responsibility.
The course began in February 2025 and successfully completed in July 2025. Kicked off in 2025, this 6-month course is taught by experienced ecologists from Hong Kong and provides 32 gifted students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Students visited various locations, including Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, Lung Fu Shan Country Park, Tsiu Hang Lions Nature Education Centre, Hong Kong Wetland Park, Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, an eco-farm, and a bee farm. These experiences immersed students in outdoor environments, allowing them to learn about ecology and biodiversity firsthand. The course aimed to establish a deeper connection between students and nature, while also dispelling public misconceptions or fears about insects due to a lack of understanding, leading to a renewed appreciation of these animals.
【Phase 1 – Ecology and Biodiversity in Hong Kong】
Participants will understand and acquire the basic theories and knowledge of Hong Kong's ecology and biodiversity through indoor classes, group activities, and outdoor field trips. This includes topics such as biological classification and diversity, the relationships between organisms and their environment, basic classification of Hong Kong insects, and related ecological knowledge.
【Phase 2 - Insect Ecology and Society】
This phase, participants gain a deeper understanding of various insect families. Furthermore, they examine the importance of insects to ecosystems and human society from different perspectives, discussing the impact of human activities on nature and insects, as well as the conservation responsibilities of various stakeholders.
【Phase 3 - Application and Group Study】
After undergoing extensive training in insect ecology and biodiversity, the students conducted group studies and transformed into insect investigators. They utilized various surveying methods and visited different locations to conduct research and collect data under the guidance of their instructor. Upon completion, they shared their findings with guests and parents at the graduation ceremony, promoting the message of insect ecology and conservation!
From being unaware of insects to becoming little insect ecologists, we strongly believe students’ enthusiasm and curiosity for insects will keep growing. They are encouraged to explore this field further and become advocates for insect conservation. Additionally, we believe sharing the knowledge with their communities will inspire a greater appreciation and awareness of nature.
The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education has filmed a short video for the course. Let’s review it together!
