Open Up Your Five Senses - Nature Logbook

The moment embraced by the nature, reset your sensations: open up to the colours in sight, the sounds in hearing, the scents in smell, the feelings in touches, and all the messages from Mother Earth. Recall the last time you visited the forest in Hong Kong, did you notice the tiny things in the surroundings? Were there specks of sunlight? Did the air feel moist? Any creatures hiding behind the bushes to chirp and sing? Let’s record them here!

Draw your impression on Hong Kong’s forest and show that in reality!

If you have forgotten or uncertain how it looks like, do not worry! OWLHK had unearthed the least findings of our forest with a group of nature lovers passionate for creative designs, and composed many more mini-games. The collective effort is compiled into the ‘Forest Exploration Logbook’! This Logbook is a guide to outdoor exploration through maximizing the use of senses and directing focused and patient observations, learning and appreciation to the natural world.

So, if we are to design a nature logbook mini-game to promote our findings, how should we get started?

The“Exploring Hong Kong Biodiversity – TrailLight.Nature Logbook Activity”is funded by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Passionate participants who are devoted in both nature and creations were led by professional eco-art instructors to follow the footsteps laid by the self-motivated games within the logbook. The game ideas were providing them a new perspective to acquaint the local forest and biodiversity, and to reflect on our relationships with the nature. Participants’ ideas contributed to the production of ‘Forest Exploration Logbook’, which has later become an impressive bridge to lead the public on extraordinary forest exploration, and mutually share the achievements of the activity!

Welcome to download OWLHK’s Forest Exploration Logbook! Wish you a nice trip in our lovely forest!

Instead of conventional black and white recording worksheets, the ‘Forest Exploration Logbook’ takes form of creative learning. It gradually cultivates the habits of making nature observation and highlights independent learning, and encourages carefree and delightful acquisition of ecological and biodiversity concepts. Richard Louv (2009) proposed the term ‘nature deficiency disorder’, which generally refers to the phenomenon of separation from nature. This phenomenon is closely linked with the development of environmental education. Therefore, through organizing the Nature Logbook Design Workshop and the ‘Forest Exploration Logbook’, users can be guided to integrate ecological knowledge into sparks of inspirations, and exhibit creativity and problem-solving ability in outdoor learning experiences, so that the delights of ecological observations can ripple further beyond.

You are welcome to share your creations with us by using Instagram tags ‘@OWLHK’ and ‘#OWLHKNatureLogbook’ when you visit our forests with your logbook! See you there!
