Advanced Course on Plant Identification

Participants observed Hong Kong wild plants at Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve

The course was launched in 2024. Collaborated with the ecology organization WEEDsilience, it was specifically designed for participants who completed the "Foundation Course on Plant Identification”. It aims to consolidate participants’ understanding of local plant species. Through conducting field trips in various types of vegetation, participants could enhance their knowledge and skills in plant identification.

Course Feature

  • Small class teaching: each class opens for application within 24 trainees, arranged on a first-come, first-served basis. Teacher-to-student ratio remains 1:8
  • Professional tutor: lecturers and field-trip tutors are local graduates of Ecology, Biology or Environmental Science who are also sophisticated in environmental education and botany research
  • Outdoor education: the 5-day course consists of over 30 hours field trip, learning at the major plantation in Hong Kong
  • Featuring Ecology Component: on top of species identification, it introduces the importance of plants ecologically

Learning Objectives

  • To master identification skills of distinguishing common plant species
  • To conduct on-site field trip at five types of vegetation in Hong Kong
  • To identify 80 common plant species in Hong Kong
  • To learn about inflorescence and classify the basic structures of flowers

Time and Format

3 sessions of indoor lectures, 1 half-day field trip and 4 full-day field trips. 36 hours in total.

Certificate

Participants will receive a certificate, provided that having at least 80% attendance and completion of personal coursework.
