(Organising Life-wide Learning Activities Through Games in Environmental Education)

Mrs. Wong NG Yin Yi, the Curriculum Development Officer from Life-wide Learning Section, EDB, shared how to utilize environmental education to perform Life-wide Learning in school in the cross-curriculum approach.

Invited by the Life-wide Learning Section, Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau and the SKH Holy Spirit Primary School, OWLHK conducted a teacher training for all teachers at 29 Oct 2019.

OWLHK Founder and Education Director Dr. Xoni Ma, invited by the Education Bureau, had been the consultant of Life-wide Learning in the Collaborative Research and Development ("Seed") Projects in 2019-20. The theme of this Life-wide Learning Project was game education, and the way to utilize real context and actual environment to conduct effective teaching and learning activities.

Thanks the arrangement from Mrs. Wong NG Yin Yi, the Curriculum Development Officer from Life-wide Learning Section, EDB, and Mr. Tin, Vice-Principal of SKH Holy Spirit Primary School, we got the chance to share our knowledge and expertise with all the teachers in the school.

The training was led by Ms. Cheng, the Principal of SKH Holy Spirit Primary School, and began with the introduction from Mrs. Wong, shared about how to utilize environmental education to perform Life-wide Learning in the cross-curriculum approach.

Then followed by Dr. Xoni Ma’s session, he used mini-game to introduce the concept and relations between climate change, environmental conservation and daily life. And he also shared the biodiversity of Hong Kong, the importance and approach of how to implement environmental education in schools.

Before ending, we had a small group discussion together with the Principal, the Vice-Principal and other teachers and Mrs. Wong. We discussed how to plan the school annual plan that includes ESD in different forms and subjects.

Thanks again for the arrangements of EDB and the SKH Holy Spirit Primary School, we were very happy to share our experience and push the development of school ESD hand-in-hand.

Mainstreaming ESD in formal education is the target of OWLHK. We are eager to organize teacher training regarding different topics in environmental education or education for sustainable development, to help teachers understanding the principles and building capacity in EE and ESD. We can tailor-make training programmes for schools, please feel free to contact us for any enquiries and we can discuss further.
