Multi-discipline Learning Through Board Games - Environmental Education

Ms. Wong Wan Chi, Joanne, Senior Curriculum Development Officer (Life-Wide Learning) of Education Bureau presented souvenirs to both speakers: Dr Irene, Cheng Nga-Yee, Assistant Professor of Hong Kong University of Education Science and Environmental Studies and Dr. Ma Kwan Ki, Founder and Education Director of OWLHK. Curriculum Development Officer (Life-Wide Learning) of Education Bureau, Mrs. Wong Ng Yin Yi, Christy shared example of board game teaching and learning.

OWLHK was funded by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department in 2018 to launch the Forest Ecology Board Game Education Programme, co-organizing with Ecology and Biodiversity Society, SS, HKUSU. It used the board game and outdoor field study as the main teaching agent and approach for primary school students to effectively understand biodiversity in Hong Kong and enhance their conservation awareness.

Teacher training under this programme was held with the Education Bureau, as the course of Life-wide Learning Teaching Professional Development, themed as “Multi-discipline Learning Through Board Games - Environmental Education”. Hope to strengthen teachers’ hands when carrying out environmental education, and consider board games to achieve all-rounded teaching and learning experience.

The training was held on 8th October 2018 at Kowloon Tong Education Service Centre, started with a briefing by the representative from the Education Bureau, and we were honoured to have Dr Irene, Cheng Nga-Yee, Hong Kong game education expert from Hong Kong University of Education to share her experience in board game education.

Then, Dr Ma Kwan Ki, Founder and Education Director of OWLHK, shared about Hong Kong biodiversity and how to use the board game “The Law of the Forest”, which is designed by OWLHK, to apply on all-round learning and environmental education.

Teachers are divided into 7 groups with tutors, the first board game with Hong Kong forest ecology and biodiversity “The Law of the Forest” was used as a demonstration to carry out board games teaching activities.

After the training, each participated teacher was given the board game "Law of the Forest" for their future teaching. The result of the training was very satisfactory according to the evaluation, 4.7 out of 5 marks were achieved in several aspects: including tutors’ performance, content, objectives and theme of the activity etc. In overall, more than 70% of participants gave full marks.
