OWLHK Environmental Education for Secondary Schools

《Law of the Forest》 Activity Series

《Law of the Forest》 is the first and only Hong Kong board game with the theme of local forest ecology and biodiversity, which was designed and published by OWLHK. Through the game’s mechanism “survival of the fittest”, students will learn about the concept of the food chain and the relationship between forest creatures, as well as the impact of human activities on forest ecosystems. 《Law of the Forest》activity series include Indoor Board Game Activity, Forest Exploration, and Activity Day.

Free Ocean Day

Learn from shore cleaning! Through indoor talk, students will learn about local marine ecology and marine debris pollution. After that, they will visit the coastal ecological hotspot, explore coastal ecology and conduct shore cleaning in groups. Students will observe coastal habitat characteristics and intertidal organism behaviors during the field trip. In addition, they will conduct shore cleaning and marine debris surveys in order to understand how marine debris affects our environment and our lives. This will help students to reflect and cultivate environment-friendly living habits to reduce waste at source in daily life.

Forest Ecologist

Let’s visit the forest, and experience hands-on forest investigation! Through indoor lectures, students will learn about local vegetation and forest research. Subsequent to the lectures, students will visit Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, and form groups to engage in various scientific investigation activities, including conducting research related to microclimate measuring and tree surveys. They will compare vegetation environments and ecological values, and discuss forest conservation issues. Data collection and analysis are involved in this activity, and students studying geography and biology subjects are highly recommended for joining this program.

Night Discovery of Amphibians and Reptiles

Under the sweltering heat, nothing is better than discovering nature at night! Through indoor lectures and games, students will learn about amphibians and reptiles’ types and habits. After acquiring a basic understanding, students will conduct night field trip visits in Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, Lau Shui Heung Reservoir or Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve. By observing nocturnal animals like frogs, snakes and insects, students will be aware of nocturnal animals’ survival skills, and initiate a discussion revolving around amphibians and reptiles’ conservation issues. (Summer exclusive from April to October)

Shui Hau “Grandma’s Mystery” Outdoor Orientation Game

Could you solve the mystery of Grandma, who lives in Lantau Island’s Shui Hau Village? Acting as the grandchildren, students will utilize the Lantau Island treasure map to complete orienteering missions and solve Grandma’s message. With the theme of Shui Hau Village’s ecology, the game will enable students to learn about Shui Hau Village’s culture, plants and intertidal organisms via games and ecology field study. What’s more, students can appreciate the beauty of Shui Hau Sandflat, Lantau Island’s “Sky Mirror”, and explore the human-nature interconnection and Lantau Island’s sustainable development.

Insect Hotel and Pollinating Insects - School Educational Program

The establishment of "Insect Hotels" provides suitable breeding grounds for urban insects, especially solitary bees, and contributes to insect conservation. Insect hotels also serve as important educational platforms to promote insect ecology and the importance of pollinating insects to the local ecosystem among students, teachers, and parents through diverse educational and citizen science activities. These programs aim to help participants overcome their fear of insects, and clear misconceptions about insects. The curriculum adopts diverse learning formats, including indoor classes, insect hotel workshops, insect ecology surveys, and training for insect hotel investigation ambassadors. It guides students to discover the fascinating aspects of insects.

Butterfly Ecology Course - School Educational Program

The Butterfly Ecology course aims to introduce the ecological knowledge of local butterflies and plants to the students while encouraging them to actively participate in ecological conservation. Through indoor classes and outdoor field trips, students learn about basic insect ecology, Hong Kong butterfly ecology, the relationship between butterflies and plants, as well as butterfly ecological crises and conservation efforts. If a butterfly garden is available in a school, the curriculum can be further integrated with a series of school-based activities in collaboration with the butterfly garden.

Professional Development and Training for School Teachers

We have always believed that environmental education needs to be mainstreamed in school curricula to achieve comprehensive societal impact, and teachers play a crucial role in this process. Therefore, we place great importance on collaborating with education bureaus, teacher training institutions, and schools to promote the professional development of teachers in environmental education. Our professional environmental education team can design and lead various training activities tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of each school. Through these activities, we aim to assist schools in effectively promoting school-based environmental education.
