Invited by Science Unit of Lingnan University, we held a Forest Ecology Field Trip for students admitting the course “Ecology: The Science of Environmental Issues” in 2023. We brought over 30 Lingnan University students to Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve. Students got to know about local forest ecology, and understood the importance of nature for human.
A 3-hour outdoor field trip was conducted in English. Even for students from non-science background, students were able to learn about the important relationships between species and environment with educational games and tutors’ interpretation. The underlying operation and importance of forest ecosystem, like pollination mechanisms and nutrient cycles and even organisms’ niches were all covered in the trip. Apart from understanding those conceptual ideas, students were excited during their encounter and discovery with the wild animals and plants with their five senses. In the final discussion, students were able to reflect the impact of human activities towards the forest ecosystem, enabling them to make a promise protecting the environment on an everyday basis.
