This course was organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education and delivered by OWLHK. The course focuses on insects, enhancing the interest and research skills of gifted students (P4-6) in ecology and biodiversity. It also aims to cultivate positive values and attitudes, such as environmental protection, respect for life, and social responsibility.
Kicked off in 2025, this 6-month course is taught by experienced ecologists from Hong Kong and provides gifted students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Students visit various locations, including the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve, Lung Fu Shan Country Park, Tsiu Hang Lions Nature Education Centre, Hong Kong Wetland Park, Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, eco-farm, and bee farm. These experiences immerse students in outdoor environments, allowing them to learn about ecology and biodiversity firsthand. The course aims to establish a deeper connection between students and nature, while also dispelling public misconceptions or fears about insects due to a lack of understanding, leading to a renewed appreciation of these animals.
【Phase 1 – Ecology and Biodiversity in Hong Kong】
Participants will understand and acquire the basic theories and knowledge of Hong Kong's ecology and biodiversity through indoor classes, group activities, and outdoor field trips. This includes topics such as biological classification and diversity, the relationships between organisms and their environment, basic classification of Hong Kong insects, and related ecological knowledge.
【Phase 2 - Insect Ecology and Society】
This phase, participants gain a deeper understanding of various insect families. Furthermore, they examine the importance of insects to ecosystems and human society from different perspectives, discussing the impact of human activities on nature and insects, as well as the conservation responsibilities of various stakeholders.
【Phase 3 - Application and Group Study】
Later on, students will conduct citizen science investigations based on selected topics. They will collect the data during field studies, analyse their findings, and share the results of their studies at the last session.
