1. Citizen Scientist
Students can also step into the role of citizen scientists and experience the excitement of real-world ecological research. Through an introductory lecture, they’ll explore the concepts of citizen science and bioblitz, learning effective techniques for observing and recording ecological data. In the outdoor field study, students work in small groups to document biodiversity using an application on their phones, conduct species counts, and contribute meaningful data to citizen science.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the significance of citizen science
- Learn how to participate in citizen science and ecological surveys
- Participate in bioblitz, explore Hong Kong’s biodiversity

2. Forest Ecologist
Venture into the forest and experience forest research. Students begin with a lecture on local vegetation and forest ecology, then head to Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve to conduct surveys in both natural woodlands and plantation. Working in teams, they’ll carry out scientific investigations such as microclimate measurements and tree surveys, comparing ecological values across different vegetation and discussing conservation challenges. This data-driven experience is highly recommended for Geography and Biology students.
Learning Objectives
- Explore Hong Kong’s biodiversity and vegetation profiles
- Learn about forest ecosystems and common species
- Conduct field research to access the ecological value of natural forests and plantation.
