Environmental Education Interflow and Co-development

Subsequent to 2019, in 2023 summer, 15 members of the OWLHK team once again set off to Taiwan. In the 7-days-6-nights interflow, the team visited Kaohsiung, Shuangliu, Dongyuan and Kenting. We had fixed schedule activities like in the past, including thorough discussion with environmental education groups, showcasing environmental education activities, and understanding culture of the Dongyuan tribes. We also had the opportunity to plan and experience other activities, for instance, problem-solving activities and diving. Such diverse experience inspired us to explore the possibilities of environmental education, enabled us to have the capability to create an ideal environmental education blueprint, and spread the seeds of ecology protection in society.

The OWLHK team stayed in Hong Kong for the summer of 2022. This year, we have exchanged education philosophy and approaches with RTC GAIA School to further explore opportunities for environmental education in Hong Kong. In addition, we organized a series of activities, such as Live Action Role Playing (LARP) games, hiking, team building and so on. Our team took this opportunity to get to know one another and enhanced our teamwork apart from work. Our team members were so impressed by this retreat camp. Let's see what they say.

Summer is a great opportunity for OWLHK team to obtain and exchange new insights. Influenced by the pandemic, we were not able to travel abroad to link up with environmental education organizations to conduct in depth exchanges and sharing. However, we have reserved a week in August to host a retreat camp. Our team took this this opportunity to get to know each other, interact with other environmental organizations and learn to drive local environmental education development from different ways and perspectives.

We have a strong conviction about environmental education, we have always believed that, environmental education is a profession.

Since the establishment of OWLHK, promotion of the professional development in environmental education in Hong Kong has always been regarded as our biggest goal, and being the best of ourselves and striving for progress are of paramount importance. Therefore, following 2018, in August 2019, the OWLHK team once again set off to Taiwan to exchange with local government departments, different professional environmental education, ecological conservation, ecological documentary groups, seniors and co-workers to learn from others, in order to improve our team’s professional capabilities.

OWLHK attaches great importance to the expertise and environmental education development of itself. We hoped the visit allowed us to comprehend the development of environmental education in Taiwan and enlighten us. Also, we could take it as a reference to promote environmental education in Hong Kong.

7 of us went on this trip that lasted for 7 days and 6 nights. Firstly, we arrived at Dongyanshan Forest Recreational Area. It allowed us to exchange and discuss the ideas of environmental education with DAUDING that is responsible for the operation of the Dongyanshan Forest Recreational Area. Also, we participated in the orienteering of Dongyanshan. We observed the “Aquatic World in the Forests” course for primary school teachers which helps them to understand the relationship between water and forest.

Right after the establishment of OWLHK, Dr. Ma Kwan Ki, Founder and Education Director, went to Taiwan for an exchange with local environmental education organizations. Dr. Ma spent 8 days with environmental educators in Friendly SEED, to experience different types of environmental education activities.
